Saving Your Baby From the Terror of Bathtime

Today I came across a post on Facebook’s group Naturally Fed Babies Private Group about a mom who has a 14 month old baby that suddenly hated taking a bath. He would scream bloody murder every time that he took a bath. The suggestions were so wonderful that I couldn’t help but share them on my blog!

Because it is a private group, I will not post names and will reword the suggestions. I have also added some of my interpretations and additional suggestions.

1. Give the baby a break and give him a sponge bath for a few days. Maybe he will come out of the phase.
2. Reintroduce him to the bath tub. Give him a sponge bath for a few days, then put him in the bath tub with no water, then try a little water at a time.
3. Try co-bathing. Get in the bath tub with him. Give him love and affection, play without splashing too much, and take it easy.
4. Give him a color bath. Add a couple drops of food coloring to the bath to make it fun. *Personally, I’m not sure if this will turn the baby’s skin colors, but the woman who suggested it said that it worked for her daughter, so apparently it didn’t turn her daughter’s skin.
5. Get a new special bath toy.
6. Try a bath light that glows under the water or a glow stick (unbroken, of course).
7. Fill the tub up before you bring him into the bathroom so that it is not too loud and then let him play with the water outside of the tub.
8. Give him a task to “help” such as turning on the water.
9. Distract him by letting him pick out his own toys.
10. Bubbles are magical! Fill up the tub with bubble bath and blow some bubbles to add to the fun. Start blowing the bubbles before you even get to the bath tub to start the fun from the very beginning.

I hope that these help a fellow mama reader out there!

I need to laugh at this one! Arhie has hated anything bath related from birth, the nurse was shocked “all newborn love the bath” she said confused… 19 months of bloody murder screaming once a week, sponge downs in between, new “special” ducks and countless other bath toys, beach balls, pit balls, making her own bottle of “spcial” bath bubbles…. nothing worked, then one morning: mommy, bath, now, bubbles, duck, bath” an din she went…. now she loves prpping her bath.

Haha! I don’t know what the nurse meant by “all newborns love the bath” because almost every baby I’ve known hated it at first. After 2-3 they usually get used to it. Kalel loves his bath time, but I know a lot of babies who go through a screaming phase. Glad she’s out of it now. :)

These are brilliant tips, my eldest went through a short spell of hating the bath after always loving it! I wish I’d seen suggestions like this at the time! Luckily she’s out of it now and loves both the bath and shower :) #abitofeverything x

My boys always loved bathing, but suggesting they got a splash of water on their head or hair washing was a totally different matter.
Thanks for sharing these tips with us, Tracey xx #abitofeverything

That’s how Kalel is. He hates washing his hair. But I just make it as quick as possible.

I had to use a flannel to rise they youngest ones hair so there was less water to potentially run in his face xx
